A group of political hopefuls from immigrant backgrounds are meeting this weekend in Las Vegas to learn the ins and outs of the industry.
New American Leaders, a nonprofit organization that recruits people of immigrant backgrounds to run for elected office, is holding its first training series of the year at Service Employees International Union Local 1107 in Las Vegas.
Candidates from an immigrant and “New American” background will be trained on all aspects of running a modern campaign such as writing speeches and building a donor base, according to a statement from the organization.
Elected state officials from Michigan, Washington and New York will lead the training series, which is the first of 2022. The organization expects 30 trainees, officials for the nonpartisan organization said in a news release.
“New Americans and people from immigrant backgrounds are fueling much of the growth in Nevada and across the country,” said Ghida Dagher, president of New American Leaders in a statement. “But too often, we don’t have a seat at the table.”
“By training New American leaders, we are helping them not only own the power of their stories and experiences,” she said, “but also use those experiences to run community-centered campaigns that challenge outdated ideas of who can and should run for office.”
There was a $150 registration fee to cover materials and food. Attendees had to pre-register.
