Two men accused of crimes in Las Vegas in late December, including a pair of killings on New Year’s Eve, were indicted today by a grand jury in Clark County District Court, records show.

Jordan Ruby, 18, and Jesani Carter, 20, both of California, were each charged with two counts of open murder, one count of attempted murder with a deadly weapon, three counts of robbery with a deadly weapon, two counts of attempted robbery and five counts of conspiracy to commit robbery, according to the indictment filed today in the Eighth Judicial District Court.

Metro Police said Ruby and Carter approached a 66-year-old woman — later identified as Clarice Yamaguchi of Hawaii — at about 1:30 p.m. Dec. 31 and attempted to rob her and her husband as they were leaving a parking structure at Fashion Show mall.

Yamaguchi refused to hand over her money, and she was subsequently shot before the suspects fled the scene a silver BMW, police said.

Yamaguchi was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

In another botched robbery later that day, police received a call at 6:14 p.m. of a man suffering from a gunshot wound inside the parking garage of Palace Station. The 60-year-old man, later identified as Hyu Sup Um, was transported to University Medical Center where he later died.

After an investigation, officers connected Ruby and Carter to Um’s shooting, as well as a separate attempted robbery in which a casino employee at a casino in the 2400 block of Las Vegas Boulevard South was shot at but not struck while inside the parking structure.

Ruby and Carter were also implicated in a Dec. 30 robbery and another New Year’s Eve robbery that they previously were not linked to, according to the indictment. The specifics of those robberies were not in the indictment, other than the names of the victims.

The two were denied bond and remain at the Clark County Detention Center, according to jail records. An arraignment is scheduled for next Wednesday. Both are being represented by public defenders, according to court records.
