Mesquite high school has the state’s best girls flag football team

Virgin Valley has blanked four opponents, ranked No. 1 in poll

Not only is the Virgin Valley High School girls flag football team undefeated on the season, the Bulldogs have won half of their games in shutout fashion.

Virgin Valley (8-0) has outscored the opposition 236-44, earning the top spot in the Flag Football Coaches’ weekly rankings.

The 3A school in Mesquite has victories over large-school classification programs Legacy and Centennial on the season, riding the strong play of senior quarterback Nina Miramontes, who opened with a six-touchdown performance against Centennial and hasn’t looked back.

Virgin Valley’s signature victory was a 13-12 win last month over perennial power Green Valley, which is tied with Liberty at No. 4 in the ranking.

Bishop Gorman is No. 2 in the poll, Shadow Ridge is No. 3 and Desert Oasis is ranked No. 6.

Palo Verde is No. 7 and Coronado comes in at No. 8, but with a chance to quickly ascend. The Cougars take on Virgin Valley on Friday.

Moapa Valley and Clark round-out the rankings.
