Albertt Monterio Jr., center, the suspect in the slaying of Las Vegas resident Destiny Jackson in September 2021, appears in Las Vegas Justice Court on Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2022.

A California man accused of killing a woman and dumping her body in the desert outside Las Vegas will remain jailed pending a bail hearing, a judge said today.

Albertt Monterio Jr., 21, was arrested Sept. 18 in Torrance, Calif., after leading police there on a chase that ended with him crashing a vehicle registered to Destiny Jackson, who was found dead off Las Vegas Boulevard in Sloan on Sept. 11, according to Metro Police.

A search of the car turned up a backpack containing two handguns, a cellphone belonging to Jackson and blood, according to a warrant.

Monterio was living in Las Vegas in September and answered a personal ad Jackson had posted online with the intent of meeting up with her and stealing her car, Metro Police said. He wanted to return to his native Southern California and did not have a vehicle, police said.

Jackson agreed to pick up Monterio on Sept. 9 and drove to the area of Amigo Street and East Cactus Avenue, where they parked in a desert lot, police said.

Monterio sensed Jackson was not going to let him take her vehicle and told her, “I’m sorry,” before shooting her three times, police said.

He then drove to Sloan, where he dumped the body, before heading to California, police said.

Monterio is facing counts of open murder and robbery. Las Vegas Justice Court Judge Holly Stoberski set his next court hearing for Feb. 16.
