The Las Vegas City Council voted today to ratify the contract of a new fire chief who brings with him decades of experience from firefighting agencies across the country.

The council voted unanimously to ratify Fernando Gray’s contract with Las Vegas Fire & Rescue after being selected for the job by City Manager Jorge Cervantes, the city said.

Gray has 21 years of experience as a firefighter and paramedic in his hometown of Dallas, where he served in roles from engineer, lieutenant and budget administrator to the department’s second in command.

In 2017, Gray was appointed fire chief in Aurora, Colo.

Gray is a staunch supporter of continuing education and is a graduate of National Fire Academy’s Executive Fire Officer Program, the city said.

He has a master of public administration degree from Sam Houston State University and a bachelor’s degree in criminal science from Texas A&M University.
