President John F. Kennedy speaks at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, on September 28, 1963. Photos include him arriving at McCarran Airport, pulling up to the convention center, and speaking in the rotunda. Governor Grant Sawyer, Senator Howard Cannon, and Senator Alan Bible are also pictured. This speech is part of an eleven-state conservation tour made by President John F. Kennedy. In his speech, the President commends the state of Nevada for its recent efforts to conserve natural resources, and proposes his administration’s plan to preserve the natural environment, which consists of high quality education for children, natural resource conservation and development programs, and the promotion of peaceful international relations. The Las Vegas Convention and Visitor’s Authority has created a website featuring 75 iconic photos from its collection to help celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Las Vegas News Bureau.

Some photos from the famed Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority’s archived photo collection are now available to the public via a website.

The organization announced Monday that 75 of the most iconic photos from its collection of Las Vegas shots are now available to the public through a website.

The site, which went live last week, was created to help celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Las Vegas News Bureau’s collection of close to 7 million photos.

News Bureau photographers have documented Las Vegas’s colorful history since 1947 for marketing purposes.

The photo collection was once the property of the Vegas Chamber, but it was brought under the umbrella of the authority in 1992.

Of the 75 photos featured on the website, various Las Vegas icons and performers are depicted, including Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Benny Binion, Nat King Cole, Wayne Newton and Mamie Van Doren.

Other photos show Las Vegas landmarks like the Flamingo or Golden Nugget, and depictions of tourists and famous personalities like Muhammad Ali and John F. Kennedy during stops in Las Vegas.

In one of the photos, Kennedy is seen speaking at the Las Vegas Convention Center on Sept. 28, 1963, only weeks before he was gunned down in Dallas.

“For decades the Las Vegas News Bureau has played an integral role in promoting tourism to Las Vegas, documenting and sharing worldwide the sights and sounds of our dynamic city,” said the organization's president and CEO Steve Hill in a statement. “We are thrilled to showcase the iconic images that have become synonymous with Las Vegas.”

The 75 “most iconic” images were selected based on how frequently the different photos have been requested and published over the years.

In total, the collection also has thousands of pieces of film and video.

The collection, curated by a full-time archivist, is kept in a temperature-controlled vault inside the Las Vegas Convention Center complex.
