Elijah Espinoza passed for five touchdowns tonight for the Las Vegas High football team in a 42-0 victory over visiting Del Sol.
Espinoza connected with older brother Gio for two scoring strikes, while Ryan Harper, Mychael Walker and Tanner Merback also had receiving touchdowns. Defensively, Alec Benavidez had an interception return for a score.
Las Vegas (7-2) overall earns a bye in next week’s opening round of the playoffs. They are out to make amends for last year’s postseason, when they squandered a second-half lead against Shadow Ridge in the state semifinals.
“That’s motivation, no doubt,” Las Vegas coach Erick Capetillo said. “Our guys remember how we felt at the end of the semifinal game.”
Las Vegas plays the winner of the game between Spring Valley and Cimarron-Memorial.
“The bye week is going to help us. It’s another week to keep improving as a young team,” Capetillo said.
