The Spring Valley football team fell behind by two touchdowns in the first quarter tonight against Perry from Gilbert, Ariz., and could have very easily been headed for a blowout loss.
But the Grizzles never wavered in keeping the game close, and even though they lost 19-14, gained confidence for the rest of the season, coach Marcus Teal said.
“We found a way to rally the troops. We weren’t going to back down,” Teal said.
Ethan Shuford and Dylan Phelps had touchdown receptions from Ti’shaun Ereaux-Jackson, and Shufford and Kory Villarreal had second-half interceptions to stop Perry scoring drives. Shufford also forced a fumble that was recovered by Raiden Kaeka.
The effort was not lost on Teal.
Perry is a class 6A team from Arizona. They had a strong traveling party that filled half of the Spring Valley stadium.
“We showed we could play with the big dogs,” the coach said. “We battled them. That was awesome. That was good to see.”
