$3.6M worth of fentanyl picked up in stop near Ely by Nevada police

Nevada State Police on Monday confiscated millions of dollars worth of suspected fentanyl, a potent opioid several times more powerful than heroin, during a traffic stop outside Ely, according to a news release.

About 9 a.m. a Nevada State Police Highway Patrol trooper conducted a stop at mile marker 75 in White Pine County, about 20 miles north of Ely, police said. The trooper conducted the stop for an apparent equipment violation, according to the release.

After making contact with the driver, the trooper observed "signs of possible criminal activity" and requested to search the vehicle. The driver consented to the search, which yielded 56 pounds of fentanyl, a street value of approximately $3.6 million, police said.

The suspect was arrested on "numerous drug related offenses," but was not identified in the release. An investigation into the matter currently remains ongoing, and no further information was available.
