Evel Knievel’s son donates houses for fire training

Area residents could see large plumes of smoke early next week as the Clark County Fire Department will practice live fire-training in two houses donated by Evel Knievel’s son.

The training is scheduled to take place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Wednesday at homes in the 9000 block of Dean Martin Drive, north of Agate Avenue.

A class of 85 rookie firefighters will undergo training through the department’s fire academy, according to a department release issued Thursday.

There will be 42 controlled burns conducted on the 1,800 square-foot and 2,400 square-foot structures.

Kelly and his wife, Paige, donated the houses for the purpose of training new firefighters, the release says.

“We are very fortunate to have homes slated for demolition occasionally donated to us for training purposes,” Fire Chief John Steinbeck said in the release. “They are invaluable resources for our Fire Academy because they give our recruits first-hand experience fighting real fires under different conditions within a highly controlled environment.”

The department has 31 full-time fire stations and 10 volunteer fire stations in rural areas and is responsible for protecting the Las Vegas Strip. It received more than 152,000 calls for service in 2021. The department also maintains one of just 28 urban search and rescue teams in the country and provides fire and rescue services to Harry Reid International Airport.
