Las Vegas OKs new police substation on Fremont Street

The Las Vegas City Council today approved a new Metro Police substation for Fremont Street in downtown.

The station is an extra security measure in response to a recent uptick of crime in the area, officials said.

Multiple shootings occurred last summer near the Fremont Street Experience. That prompted the addition of metal detectors, bag checks and a curfew for people under 21 years old throughout the summer.

Two people were shot Dec. 29 near 4th and Fremont streets, a day after a hit-and-run accident in the same area took the lives of two New Mexico tourists.

“Public Safety is the city’s top priority and this new substation will allow for an increased law enforcement presence in downtown and specifically the Fremont Street Experience,” Mayor Caroyln Goodman said in a statement.

“We want all of our residents and visitors to enjoy everything that our city has to offer, while being confident that they are safe and secure,” she said.

The substation will open later this year at 425 East Fremont St.

The substation is a partnership between the city, Metro and the Fremont Street Experience.

Deputy city marshals, Metro officers and security from the Fremont Street Experience will use the building, along with representatives from the city’s business licensing team, city officials said.
