The Clark County Commission today named Lorena Portillo, a longtime employee of the Election Department, registrar of voters.

Portillo was assistant to former Registrar of Voters Joe Gloria, who held the position from 2013 until he retired in January. She has been with the Election Department more than 25 years.

“I humbly accept the appointment as registrar of voters and, with great honor, I will continue the excellent work we are known for on a statewide and a nationwide basis,” Portillo said.

“I have the privilege to have been taught by the best and will fulfill my duties with the utmost respect for this democratic process,” she said.

Commissioner Ross Miller, who served on a committee that conducted a search to fill the position, said Portillo is “well qualified, has extensive election experience and is respected by her peers in the industry.”

“Lorena is well suited for this position, and I’m glad to lend my support for her appointment,” Miller said in a statement.

Supporters of Portillo, who showed up at today’s commission meeting to advocate for her appointment, erupted in cheers after the vote.

“I know you had many candidates. She honestly has a track record of being able to work with so many different communities and be able to provide the resources that those communities need,” said Emily Persaud-Zamora, executive director of Silver State Voices.

The Election Department administers federal, state and local elections for the more than 1.3 million active registered voters in Clark County.

About 40 full-time staff work at the department year-round, and more than 3,500 temporary staff are brought in for every election cycle, county officials said.
