The suspect in the shooting of a campus security monitor Monday at a northeast Las Vegas middle school is being held on 24 felony counts, including four counts of attempted murder, authorities say.
Metro Police announced today that they had arrested Jessie Rios, 18, this morning in connection with the wounding of the school employee, which happened about 12:40 p.m.Monday outside Ed Von Tobel Middle School, 2436 N. Pecos Road.
A man on campus was hit by a stray bullet and taken to a hospital in stable condition, police said.
Rios has been charged with four counts of attempted murder with intent to promote or assist a criminal gang, four counts of discharging a gun into an occupied structure, one count of battery with a deadly weapon and 15 counts of discharging a gun within a structure in a prohibited area, according to court and jail records. All are felonies.
Rios was being held at the Clark County Detention Center without bond, jail records show.
His initial appearance will be Wednesday morning in Las Vegas Justice Court, according to court records.
The Education Support Employees Association, the union representing support staff in the Clark County School District, identified the injured man as a campus security monitor. Nobody else was injured, police said.
“During the investigation, detectives were able to determine that the shooting took place a few blocks away from the school and a stray bullet struck the victim, who was on school property,” police said in a statement announcing Rios’ arrest.
No additional information was released regarding Rios’ apprehension or the charges.
The shooting sent Von Tobel and neighboring elementary schools into lockdown as police searched for the shooter.
Metro, Clark County School District Police and Nevada State Police, along with the Clark County Fire Department, responded to the incident.
In a note to families Monday, Von Tobel’s principal said the employee was not inside the school building when he was hit.
CCSD’s campus security monitors are unarmed civilians who complement the district’s armed, certified police officers.
