This booking photo provided by the Henderson Police Department shows Ronald Lee Winborne, 53, following his arrest March 21, 2023. Police in the southern Nevada city of Henderson said Wednesday, May 17, 2023, they are investigating the death in custody of Winborne, who was arrested with use of a stun gun and died almost a week later from complications of a broken collarbone.

Body camera footage released by the Henderson Police Department Wednesday shows Ronald Lee Winborne falling to the ground as he seems to be running away from officers before being tased and arrested.

He died while in custody several days later, which the Clark County Coroner’s Office ruled "a homicide due to the use of force during his initial arrest” and listed as complications of a broken collarbone.

The department announced Tuesday it had opened an investigation into Winborne’s death after the ruling.

Officers initially responded to Greenway Road and Horizon Drive on March 21 to a report of a man swinging a knife at moving vehicles.

Winborne, 53, can be seen swinging his arm behind him as he runs away from officers in body camera video.

After Winborne is tased and subdued, an officer at the scene describes the weapon as a “butter knife.”

Winborne died at Sunrise Hospital on March 27, several days after his arrest.

The coroner's ruling, issued May 10, also listed high blood pressure and liver disease as complicating factors.

Henderson Fire Department provided medical treatment on the scene and cleared him to be transported to Henderson Detention Center, the release says.

An officer in the video can be heard saying, “Start medical. He went down good.”

Winborne was charged with assault with a deadly weapon on a public officer, assault with a deadly weapon, resisting a public officer and resisting public officer with a deadly weapon.

Medical staff at the detention center requested that Winborne be reevaluated at the hospital. He was evaluated at St. Rose DeLima Hospital and discharged.

While in custody on March 27, Winborne’s health began to decline and he was transported to Sunrise Hospital where he later died.

The body camera footage starts with a frenzy of officers running. Officers shout for him to not to run and to put the knife down.

“Get on the (obscenity) ground,” one officer yells. “Get on the ground or you are going to get tased. You are going to get tased (obscenity).”

Winborne is tased by an officer within seconds of the video starting.

Tuesday release stated that the case remains an open investigation and no other details will be released.

Henderson Police Department is the investigative agency into Winborne’s death.
