The lights of the California state Capitol glow into the night in Sacramento, Calif., Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2022.

Between 2021 and 2022, roughly 818,000 California residents moved out of state, according to recent data from the U.S. Census Bureau.

The bureau's data shows a net loss of roughly 342,000 people, slightly lower than the year before but still a major contributor to the state's declining population.

Where are Californians moving to?

From 2021 to 2022, Texas was the most common destination for former California residents. Almost 102,000 people moved to Texas from California, data shows.

The data also shows a growing number of residents leaving from the Golden State to Arizona.

Arizona was the second-most popular destination for about 74,000 California residents, according to the bureau's data.

Florida also saw a surge of Californians with approximately 51,000 people.

Nevada received about 49,000 of former California residents in 2022.

How many people moved to California?

Though Texas was a popular destination for Californians previously, the bureau's data also indicated that approximately 42,000 Texas residents moved to California.

Almost 32,000 former Washington residents also left for California.

California was also the most populated by international migrants in 2022, according to previous data from the bureau.

While California lost a high number of residents to other states, it still received almost 126,000 people coming from other countries.
