Las Vegas High School head football coach Erick Capetillo poses with Sir Herkimer’s Bone at the school Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2022. The Bone Game, a rivalry football game between Rancho High and Las Vegas High School, started in 1957.

The Las Vegas High football team had to wait two weeks to begin their season.

The Wildcats quickly made up for lost time on Friday with five total touchdowns from Tanner Vibabul in a 44-0 victory over rival Rancho in the annual Bone Game. It was Las Vegas’ 26th straight win in the series.

Las Vegas and Rancho each had games canceled two weeks ago because of poor weather conditions. So, when it started to rain tonight, there was immediate concern as officials called for a 30-minute break to let the storm pass, Las Vegas coach Erick Capetillo.

“The kids on both teams were itching to play,” the coach said. “It caused a little bit of distraction, but we have great senior leaders who kept the team focused.”

Vibabul had touchdown passes to Julian Torres, Treshawn Bush, Mychael Walker and his brother, Tommy. Tanner Vibabul also rushed for a score.

After offseason conditioning and summer workouts, having to wait an extra two weeks to play wasn’t ideal, Capetillo said. A game scheduled for Colorado in the second week of the season was also canceled.

“It’s hard to keep the kids focused when there isn’t a game to play in,” Capetillo said. “Our kids were eager to play football.”
