The greater Lake Tahoe area can expect some snow this week, but don’t bring out your skis yet.

An early season storm is coming into the region, according to Tony Fuentes, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s office in Reno.

However, it won’t produce much snow, he told The Sacramento Bee on Wednesday.

Around the Tahoe basin, the snow level is expected to drop at around 8,000 feet Friday night and into early Saturday, Fuentes said.

“Areas above that could see some light snow showers, mostly like flakes,” he said, adding that the snow will likely melt on contact with the ground.

Very cold weather systems have hit the Tahoe region before, Fuentes said, but the last one was about five or 10 years ago.

“It’s mostly kind of a dramatic cool down,” he said.

The Tahoe region may experience colder temperatures this weekend, the National Weather Service said in a post on X, with low temperatures in some parts of the Sierra Valley dipping below freezing.
