Green Valley’s Ben Parker scored on a quarterback keeper with about four minutes to play tonight to bring the Gators to within one point of host Herriman, a Class 6A school in Utah.
Bill Powell, in his first game as Green Valley’s head coach, didn’t hesitate going for the 2-point conversion to take the lead. Parker rushed in the conversion attempt for the decisive points in a 22-21 victory.
Green Valley overcame a handful of obstacles in winning — traveling to Utah, playing at higher elevation, and competing against a team who had already played. The Gators still emerged with the win.
“The kids were thrilled,” Powell said. He then added, “The kids are exhausted.”
Parker had a hand in all three scores, rushing for a pair of touchdowns and connecting on a 72-yard scoring strike to Theodore Edquilang.
