Metro Police vehicles are parked in the porte cochere at Caesars Palace Tuesday, July 11, 2023. Metro Police were called after a man apparently forced a woman into a hotel room and barricaded himself inside. The department is set to get a $37.7 million increase to its budget for fiscal year 2024, which was approved by the Clark County Commission on Tuesday, June 18, 2024.

The Clark County Commission unanimously approved a $37.7 million addition to Metro Police’s fiscal year 2024 budget today, putting the department’s acting budget over $800 million for the first time.

The approved increase would put the department’s current total budget at just over $822 million, according to Commission documents. The 4.8% increase is $30 million shy of the department’s Fiscal Year 2025 budget, which will be nearly $853 million, according to the approved budget on Metro’s website. Metro’s Fiscal Year 2024 ends June 30.

A spokesperson for the department said $23 million of the approved funds will go toward salaries and benefits for Metro employees, most of which is for reimbursable overtime for special events. The LVMPD Capitol Improvement Plan will receive $8.7 million, which will go toward projects like Joint Emergency Training Institute.

Clark County provides the largest share of Metro’s revenue at 41.2%. $10 million of the approved $37 million will come from charges for services from the department to the county, and county officials also approved nearly tripling the department’s revenue from interest earnings from $1 million to $2.8 million. Revenue from “miscellaneous” funds also was increased from $910,000 to $4.6 million.
