Letter to the Editor:

TikTok is nothing to fear

I’m 72, read the daily papers, and have been on TikTok for three years and Facebook since Farmville. I also have X and Instagram accounts, and have even been experimenting with AI.

I am old and wise enough to recognize nefarious content from these sites. So far, I have found none coming from TikTok, Facebook or Instagram. I choose the content I’m interested in and post my own ideas and opinions. Sometimes I see opposing opinions and ugliness, but nothing as dangerous and damaging as what I see on Fox News, OANN, the Drudge Report, Newsmax and The Washington Times.

TikTok is a tool for political banter, logistics and organizing for all political parties and ideals. It is also the app chosen by most young people, at or nearing voting age.

About 160 million U.S. citizens use this app. It is no more dangerous than Amazon, in rendering America’s data to China. That glass art I ordered from Amazon suddenly showed it on my Amazon app in a boat from China. They have my address, phone number, email address and probably my credit card number, and the art never arrived. My social media accounts don’t have that information.

Most young voters using TikTok are Democrats. Banning it would only help Donald Trump.

A Trump win would allow Vladimir Putin to have his way. “Do you really want to pet that dog?” TikTok users will know what that means. Before banning TikTok, how about using it once in a while?
