The Las Vegas City Council ratified on a 7-0 vote this morning Susan Heltsley’s contract as chief financial officer starting this summer.

She will earn an annual salary of $227,000 plus benefits.

“I’m just honored and grateful and super excited about this opportunity,” Heltsley said before the vote. “I know it will be very challenging. I’m very up for it.”

Heltsley will become the third CFO in the city’s 119 year history, City Manager Mike Janssen said. The office was established in 2009.

Heltsley will oversee the city’s Finance, Human Resources, and Innovation and Technology departments, as well as the Office of Strategic Services.

The current CFO, Gary Ameling, is retiring in July and will help Heltsley transition into the role before he leaves, Janssen said.

Originally from Olympia, Wash., Heltsley graduated from Saint Martin’s College in Lacey, Wash., with a bachelor’s degree in accounting and a master’s degree in business administration.

She is also a Nevada certified public accountant who has spent 25 years in financial management.

She worked as the assistant general manager and CFO for the Clark County Water Reclamation District for three years before joining the city of Las Vegas as a director of finance in October 2021.

At today’s meeting, members of the city’s finance teamlined the back wall of the council chambers holding flashing lights, noisemakers and signs with the letters “C,” “F” and “O” on them.

Mayor Carolyn Goodman praised Ameling and complimented the work of the city’s finance team, including that of Heltsley.

Goodman also commended Heltsley for her work ethic, saying “she’s always the last one out of the building.”
