Winona Ryder gave her opinion during first “Beetlejuice” filming

LONDON (AP) – Winona Ryder has vivid memories of appearing in the first “Beetlejuice” movie because she was treated as an adult. Ryder was 15, and she says it was the first time a director asked her what she thought. Ryder says normally, directors would just tell her where to stand and what her cue was. Ryder says coming back to “Beetlejuice” for a sequel was “like a fantasy.” The new movie, called “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” is in theaters now.

Brandy: please yell during “The Front Room”

LOS ANGELES (AP) – Brandy has given her approval to people yelling at the screen during her new psychological horror film, “The Front Room.” Brandy has issued a “public service announcement” saying normally people are told to keep quiet during movies, but her film about a diabolical mother-in-law is different. She says she wants people to “scream, shout, clap and tell that mother to crawl back to where she came from." “The Front Room” is in theaters today.

Samuel L. Jackson sorts reality from myth in “Fight Night”

NEW YORK (AP) – After Muhammad Ali’s historic 1970 fight in Atlanta, a brazen heist took place at an afterparty where the country’s wealthiest people attended. That’s the story portrayed in the new movie “Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist,” starring Kevin Hart, Samuel L. Jackson and Don Cheadle. Jackson says he wanted to be part of the movie because he actually was in Atlanta at that time, and he knows how the story took on a life of its own in the Black community. Jackson says it was fun to address the reality and the mythology of that night. “Fight Night” is streaming on Peacock now.

“The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives” looks at the modern version of the religion

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) – If your idea of Mormon women is that they churn butter in bonnets, the series “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives” might open your eyes. One of the stars, Demi Engemann, says maybe that was true at one point, but the series shows the modernized version of Mormon women. Castmate Mikayla Matthews says Mormon women have spray tans and hair extensions, and usually they’re “dressed to the nines.” “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives” follows a group of young Mormon women on TikTok who live in the Salt Lake City area. It’s streaming now on Hulu.

Manhattan prosecutors seeking new indictment against Harvey Weinstein

NEW YORK (AP) – Prosecutors in New York say they have begun presenting evidence to a grand jury that could result in new charges against former movie producer Harvey Weinstein. At a court conference in Manhattan on Tuesday, Judge Curtis Farber elicited basic details about sexual misconduct allegations involving three more people dating back to the mid-2000s at hotels and a private residence. Weinstein was convicted in 2020 of rape and sexual assault in New York, but the state’s top court ordered a retrial. He was convicted of rape in Los Angeles in 2022. He has denied wrongdoing.

McCarthy and Owen will star in series about JonBenet Ramsey

LOS ANGELES (AP) – Melissa McCarthy and Clive Owen will play the parents of JonBenet Ramsey in a limited series that’s in the works for Paramount Plus. The eight-episode series is based on the unsolved 1996 murder of Ramsey, who was a six-year-old pageant contestant. Production is set to begin in Calgary.

Netflix is developing “Midnight Sun” series

NEW YORK (AP) – Netflix confirms it is working on an animated series based on the Stephanie Meyer’s novel “Midnight Sun.” It is a retelling of the “Twilight” story from Edward Cullen’s perspective.
