Don’t be surprised if the winning team in tonight’s Class 5A Division II league opener between Faith Lutheran and host Shadow Ridge reaches the state championship game in November.

The schools appear to be the class of the seven-team classification in the south, meaning the winner will be in the driver’s seat to win the regular season league crown and have an easier playoff path.

It wouldn't be the first time either team has made it to the championship game.

Faith Lutheran lost in last year’s state title game to Bishop Manogue of Northern Nevada. Shadow Ridge fell in the 2021 and 2022 title game to Silverado.

The Faith Lutheran-Shadow Ridge matchup isn't the only game of interest this evening.

Bishop Gorman, which last week had its 27-game winning streak snapped, hosts a top-20 national opponent in Orange Lutheran out of California. Liberty hosts American Fork out of Utah.

Locally, Desert Pines and Las Vegas square off in a battle of notable east Las Vegas programs; Basic travels to Summerlin to face Palo Verde; and Green Valley and Legacy play in what might be the closest contest of the night.
