Las Vegas police: Officer fatally shoots man armed with baseball bat

A Metro Police officer shot and killed a man today after using several less-lethal methods as the man approached him with a baseball bat, according to Metro officials.

The shooting occurred about 9 a.m. in the 5100 block of Rawhide Street after police received reports of a man trying to open doors at an apartment complex and threatening residents, police said.

Officers arrived and the man was “uncooperative,” using his vehicle as a barrier between himself and police, Metro said.

After a verbal altercation with officers, the man retrieved a metal baseball bat from the car and began approaching the officers, who fired tasers at him three times to no effect, police said.

One officer then shot a single time at the man, who “immediately hit the ground,” Metro Capt. Kurt McKenzie said.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel, police said.

The incident was the ninth Metro officer-involved shooting this year. Six of the shootings have been fatal.
