Derek Hurley had two fumble returns for a touchdown Friday night for the Coronado football team in a 47-7 victory against visiting Liberty.

Marquesion Floyde added an interception return for a touchdown in helping Coronado hand Liberty its first loss to a non-Gorman local opponent since 2014.

“We played fast; we played mean,” coach Shawn Dupris said. “The offense moved the ball. We just executed.”

Coronado was coming off a poor performance two weeks ago against Lincoln of San Diego, trailing 14-0 minutes into the game and never mounting a serious comeback.

But the program returned to basics during the bye week, Dupris said.

“We played all four quarters,” the coach said. “If we played four quarters, we have a chance against anybody.”

Dupris is in his second season helming the Coronado program. Last season, they upset Desert Pines in the playoffs to advance to the state semifinals.

This year, with quarterback Aiden Krause (Georgetown) and wide receiver JJ Buchanan (Utah) leading the way, Coronado can compete against any opponent, they feel.

That was evident against perennial power Liberty, a neighborhood rival in Henderson.

“Good things happen when you execute. That’s what we did tonight,” Dupris said.
