League play begins tonight in the state’s top high school football classification, where perennial power Liberty is expecting a tough game against neighborhood rival Coronado.

That’s because Coronado has two future college players leading the offense in quarterback Aiden Krause (Georgetown) and wide receiver JJ Buchanan (Utah).

Krause completed 52 of 74 passes for 788 yards and 11 touchdowns to lead Coronado to a 2-1 record in nonleague games. However, the Cougars struggled two weeks ago in losing to Lincoln of San Diego — and will face a similar quality opponent tonight in Liberty.

Don’t let Liberty’s 1-3 record fool you.

The Patriots, who were ranked in the top 100 nationally to start the season, played a who’s who of out-of-state competition in the preseason. And the Patriots haven’t lost to a local public school opponent since 2014 when they were upset by Canyon Springs. (The only other defeats over the past decade have come against Bishop Gorman).

This isn’t the only game of the night.

The Class 3A Southern League is starting conference games, including Moapa Valley facing Slam Nevada in a game some feel will determine the division champion.
