Officer involved shooting of man with bat in Las Vegas detailed by Metro

Metro Police released new details about the police shooting that killed one man Friday morning after he allegedly charged at officers with a metal baseball bat.

The deceased man, identified by Metro as 42-year-old Kyle Norris, was confronted by police in an apartment complex in the 5100 block of Rawhide Street after officers received reports of an auto burglary. Officials on the scene were told by residents Norris had been trying car door handles and making threats to residents before officers arrived, according to police.

Several officers surrounded Norris by a car, attempting to persuade him into peacefully surrendering himself into police custody, however bodycam footage presented by Metro on Tuesday showed Norris did not believe officers were “the real police.” Norris can be seen in the video pacing back and forth, seemingly in distress as he communicated with police.

After failing to place Norris peacefully into custody, the man opened the car’s passenger door and retrieved a metal baseball bat before charging at officers as Officer Samuel Garcia yelled at Norris to “drop the f—ing bat.” Two officers fired three taser rounds at Norris which did not stop Norris’ approach toward officers before Garcia shot twice at Norris with his gun.

Norris was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel, making the shooting the sixth fatal police shooting by Metro in 2024, and the ninth Metro officer-involved shooting overall. At the same time in 2023, only five police-involved shootings had occurred, two of which were fatal.

Assistant Sheriff Dori Koren, who presented information on the shooting and bodycam footage on Tuesday, said the tasers, known as electronic control devices, had about a 70% efficacy rate in 2023. Officials said Norris was not a resident of the apartment complex where he was shot but was “visiting an acquaintance.”
