As a crucial battleground state, Nevada might be expected to play a starring role in the made-for-TV Republican National Convention. But because of infighting within the state party structure and a state convention coup by Rep. Ron Paul’s supporters, Nevada’s starring role may look like a dysfunctional sideshow instead.
After claiming the county and state conventions, the Nevada delegation’s Ron Paul Revolutionaries are determined to “plant the flag” for their cause at the Republican National Convention in Tampa. But this time, they’re going to have to do it without their usual props.
All week long, Ron Paul supporters were predicting that they’d get upward of 10,000 fans for their pre-convention P.A.U.L. Fest of rock bands and raucous speakers.
“Our first priority is ensuring the safety of delegates, alternates, guests, members of the media attending the Republican National Convention,” RNC chairman Reince Priebus said in an announcement Saturday afternoon. “But our convention will proceed.”
On the national stage, deals are being struck between Republican presidential nominee-to-be Mitt Romney and Rep. Ron Paul to ensure a harmonious national convention next week in Tampa, Fla.
Gov. Brian Sandoval secured a prime-time speaking slot at the Republican National Convention in Tampa, his spokeswoman confirmed today. He will speak Monday at 6 p.m. local time.
