Sam Stout lands ‘one of the most vicious knockouts’ ever at UFC 131

    June 12, 2011

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA — From his choice of entrance music to the way he tried to diagnose the problem earlier this week, it was easy to see how much a knockout victory would mean to UFC veteran Sam Stout. Stout, a lightweight who trains in Las Vegas, got his wish Saturday night at Rogers Arena. For the first time in 11 career fights in the UFC, Stout won via stoppage when he knocked out Yves Edwards at 3:52 of the first round.

  • Dave Herman, left, of Fort Wayne, Ind., celebrates his technical knockout win over Jon Olav Einemo, of Norway, in their heavyweight mixed martial arts bout at UFC 131, Saturday, June 11, 2011, in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Dave Herman gave heavyweight first impression at UFC 131

    June 14, 2011

At this point of his UFC career, heavyweight Dave Herman is known as much for one sarcastic remark as anything he’s accomplished in the octagon. Herman proclaimed jiu-jitsu doesn’t work before his fight with John Olav Einemo at Saturday’s UFC 131 fight card in Vancouver, British Columbia. “I don’t think it does honestly,” Herman said in the post-fight press conference.

  • Junior Dos Santos, left, of Brazil, looks at Shane Carwin, of Greeley, Colo., after their main event heavyweight mixed martial arts bout at UFC 131, Saturday, June 11, 2011, in Vancouver, British Columbia. Dos Santos won by decision.

UFC 131 weigh-in: Top heavyweights set for quick, explosive bout

    June 10, 2011

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA — Junior dos Santos did his best Georges St. Pierre impression at Friday’s UFC 131 weigh-in. After dos Santos weighed in at 239 pounds for his heavyweight main event bout against Shane Carwin (254), he addressed the crowd the same way Georges St. Pierre did at UFC 129 in Toronto. “Just remember guys,” dos Santos said. “Don’t blink.”

Sam Stout could live up to reputation and please crowd once again at UFC 131

    June 10, 2011

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA — Sam Stout has lost a couple of close split decisions during his 10-fight run with the UFC. To most fighters, those experiences would rank as the most frustrating moments of their career. Stout (16-6-1 MMA, 5-5 UFC) is different. He vividly recalls which one of his bouts left him most angry. It came in a 2008 win over Per Eklund at UFC 80 — the only time Stout has ever heard a crowd boo one of his fights.

  • Dustin Poirier flexes during the weigh in for UFC 125 Friday, December 31, 2010 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

Two bright prospects should star on UFC 131 preliminary card

    June 10, 2011

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA — Wearing a label like “top prospect” is always a tricky proposition in the fighting world. On one hand, it means people have recognized a fighter’s talent or potential. But it also means an increase in expectations and makes any slip-up or loss all the more noticeable.

  • Junior Dos Santos, left, of Brazil, and Shane Carwin, of Denver, Colo., who are to fight in the main event, face off after a UFC 131 news conference in Vancouver, British Columbia, Thursday, June 9, 2011. UFC 131 is scheduled to be held in Vancouver on Saturday.

Loss to Brock Lesnar led to significant changes for Shane Carwin

    June 10, 2011

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA — Video from the first round of the UFC 116 main event last summer played on repeat in the theater of Shane Carwin’s mind. Carwin beat then-UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar into oblivion and nearly defeat in the first five minutes. Then, with Carwin drained of all energy, Lesnar came back to win via submission in the second round. Carwin constantly thought back about the specifics and what could have changed the outcome for a while. Should he have traded a few of his ground-and-pound strikes for a couple deep breaths? Could he have allowed Lesnar back to his feet and attempt to knock him out from there?

  • UFC fighter Kenny Florian speaks at a press conference.

Kenny Florian finds new home in featherweight division at UFC 131

    June 9, 2011

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA — UFC mainstay Kenny Florian’s 35th birthday passed two weeks ago without his favorite component of the celebration — cake. Florian (14-5 MMA, 11-4 UFC) hasn’t eaten much of anything lately in preparation for his UFC 131 co-main event bout against Diego Nunes (16-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC) Saturday at Rogers Arena. That’s where Florian, the two-time former top lightweight contender, will make his debut in the 145-pound weight class. He’ll become the first fighter in UFC history to compete in four different divisions, as he started his career in the organization at 185 pounds on the first season of “The Ultimate Fighter”.

Mark Munoz not wary of fight with Demian Maia going to the ground

    June 8, 2011

Asked for his thoughts on UFC 131 opponent Mark Munoz, Demian Maia had to mention his “heavy hands”. Munoz, a middleweight who fights out of Vallejo, Calif., would likely smirk at the compliment. The 33-year-old Munoz (10-2 MMA, 5-2 UFC) has become known as a power puncher because of recent performances. But he doesn’t see it.

  • Junior Dos Santos looks to finish Gabriel Gonzaga during their heavyweight bout at UFC Live: Vera vs. Jones at 1stBank Center in Broomfield, Colo. on March 21, 2010. Dos Santos won the fight by knockout.

Junior dos Santos and Shane Carwin each have notched 12 victories in their mixed martial arts career. Out of the combined 24 wins, 22 of them have come via first round stoppage. In the UFC, they both have four first round knockouts apiece. “Let’s face it: Both dos Santos and I got to where we’re at by knocking people out on our feet,” Carwin said. “That’s just where I’m most passionate right now. I think we’re both explosive fighters and the fans are going to have a real treat.”

Brock Lesnar steps out of UFC 131 bout to once again battle diverticulitis

    May 12, 2011

The UFC has lost a headlining bout on an upcoming fight card for the second time in less than a week. Former heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar, who was scheduled to fight Junior dos Santos in the Main Event of UFC 131 on June 11 in Vancouver, has come down with diverticulitis for the second time in two years and has pulled out of the No. 1 contender fight. Diverticulitis is an intestinal disease that threatened Lesnar's life in September 2009 and made him pull out of a championship bout with Shane Carwin.
