Fresh off the best season in school history, Mojave eyes spot as a perennial contender

The 2012 season was a coming out party for the Mojave High football team. The Rattlers made the postseason for just the second time in the school’s near two decades of existence and was able to capture the first playoff win in program history. “It meant a lot getting to playoffs and overcoming the season prior to it. It meant that the turnaround school wasn’t just education wise, but athletic wise,” Mojave coach Joe Delgado said.

The excitement of making the postseason turned into nightmare for the Pahrump Valley football team in the final game of 2012. It was then second-year Pahrump coach Joe Clayton realized something. “We got the feeling like they didn’t belong there,” Clayton said of the 65-0 rout at the hands of perennial power Moapa Valley in the opening round of the Division I-A playoffs.

Second-year Western High football coach Donnie Davis kept it simple when asked what it would take for his team to make the postseason. “Win!!!” he wrote, adding exclamation points for extra emphasis. As simple as it sounds, there’s a lot more to it, especially for a team that went 0-9 in 2012 and lost by an average of 35 points.
Green Valley football coach tries to downplay high expectations

Expectations are so high for the Green Valley football team, some believe they are the favorites to win the Sunrise Region and not three-time defending region champ Liberty.
Green Valley coach Brian Castro isn’t buying into it that notion. “It’s not our focus. We’re focused on what we’re doing on the practice field and what to do to get better,” Castro said. “The kids know there is a little bit of buzz out there. We’re not going to sneaking up on anybody. This year, people kind of know that we’re here and we’re definitely expecting to get everyone’s best efforts.”

An attorney representing UCLA basketball great and Henderson resident Ed O’Bannon in a class-action lawsuit against the NCAA had strong words on a decision by college athletics' governing body to part ways with longtime video game partner EA Sports. Michael Hausfeld, whose firm is leading O’Bannon’s lawsuit, called the NCAA’s Tuesday decision “arrogant” and “petty” in lieu of their breakup with EA Sports. O’Bannon, the star of UCLA’s 1995 national championship team, is suing the NCAA for using his likeness in one of EA Sports’ college basketball games.
