If there was a team that was victim of being in a tough division in 2007, it was Centennial. The Bulldogs opened the season with three straight wins, but couldn’t sustain the momentum in Northwest Division play as they dropped their first four league games. They rebounded to end the season with three straight wins, giving them a 6-4 record in coach George Baker’s debut season.

No less than 12 large-school classification head coaching positions have changed in Clark County since November, more than a third of the 31 available jobs. Reaching the playoffs last fall for the first time in school history was a big step for Mojave, which opened in 1996. The Rattlers opened with eight consecutive victories before dropping their final three games, including a 46-29 setback to Western in the Sunset Regional quarterfinals. “We were the team to beat in the beginning of the season,” Mojave coach Tyrone Armstrong said. “We lost some of that mental toughness toward the end. We want to take what we learned and try to build on it.”

Cheyenne has long been in the shadow of Northwest Division rival Palo Verde. In coach Charles Anthony’s four seasons with the Desert Shields, half of his 10 losses have come against the Panthers. But with the threat of zoning changes from new schools gone, Anthony has finally been able to keep the same players together. “If we get beat it won’t be from a lack of experience,” Anthony said. “There have been some years, with new schools opening up, that we have lost a lot of players. The team is stable now.”

The transition to a new head coach will hardly feel like a change for Cimarron-Memorial this season. Rod Vollan has coached in the program since the school opened 18 years ago. Now, he takes over for Ron Smeltzer, who retired after last season. “Everyone knows him,” senior lineman Jordan Padgett said. “He’s got everything real organized and he’s working us a lot more in conditioning. So I think he’s going to do well.”
