LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Ukraine needs US to get in the fight

Do we really support Ukraine in its struggle against Russian invaders?

Russia is almost 30 times the physical size of Ukraine, and has more than three times the population. And Russia has nuclear weapons. Vladimir Putin says he won’t use them, but then he said he had no plans to invade Ukraine — until he did.

How was World War II won? Was it the Lend-Lease Act, which sent ships, planes and weapons to our allies? Or was it when we physically took the fight right into Germany after D-Day? When we started taking back islands in the Pacific from Japan?

It is great to send weapons to Ukraine, and maybe it is regaining some of its territory, but Ukrainian civilians are dying daily, while Russian civilians sit content and peaceful in a country free of invaders. And now winter is coming, as Russia destroys the Ukrainian power grid.

Putin has no reason to end this war. He has a larger military, more weapons, and sits in a country in no danger of warfare affecting him or his populace.

The sanctions the world has imposed on Russia are doing nothing to stop this war. Economic sanctions do not end wars. Guns and bullets end wars. The United States and the rest of NATO need to provide better support to Ukraine, and bring the fight home to Russia, if we really want to stop Putin.
