New details emerged today with the release of a police report in the arrest of a 33-year-old man accused of chopping an infant and his mother with an ax, killing the baby. Harold E. Montague was booked on one count of murder with a deadly weapon, two counts of attempted murder with a deadly weapon and one count of attempted murder on a police officer in connection with an attack late Thursday morning.

The bail came in spite of objections from the man’s lawyer, who cited a much lower bail in another high-profile case: Wednesday’s crash into the Edgewater Hotel & Casino in Laughlin. “I invite the court, with all due respect, and the state, to tell me how these charges differ from the charges that occurred in Laughlin,” said Gary Guymon, who is representing Nathan Hardy.

A man suspected of scamming elderly victims out of millions of dollars in a real estate development scheme appeared this morning in district court, where he entered a plea of not guilty to the charges against him. Jamal Eljwaidi, also known as Jean Marc Eljwaidi, is charged with six counts of elder exploitation, a felony, for allegedly taking investors’ money for a real estate development and spending it on himself. A trial date in the case was set for April 26. Eljwaidi’s attorney, Steve Wolfson, said he hopes the case will be negotiated before that point.

A foster mother found guilty of murder in the 2006 death of her foster son was sentenced today to 50 years in prison with parole eligible after 20 years. Melanie Ochs, 42, was convicted in October 2009 on a first-degree murder charge in the death of the 7-month-old child, called Baby Boy Charles. Ochs testified at her trial and said the boy fell onto the floor of her northwest valley home after she set him on the washing machine.

Prosecutors could pursue the death penalty against a California man accused of sexually assaulting and murdering a Las Vegas woman in her northwest valley home last week. Derrick Valentine, 37, appeared in court today in front of Senior Clark County District Court Judge Joseph Bonaventure for arraignment. He waived his right to a preliminary hearing within 15 days and a hearing was set for March 15.

Former Clark County Recorder Frances Deane was sentenced today to five years of probation on three felony counts stemming from a scheme to profit from her public office. Deane pleaded guilty in August to felony charges of theft, misconduct of a public officer and unlawful commissions, personal profit and compensation of public officers. In addition to probation, Deane is also required to pay $54,000 in restitution to the county.
