Vegas Play of the Day: Indiana at Minnesota

The sixth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun's sports staff is now underway, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2018-19 and 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

Indiana plus-5.5 at Minnesota: $550 to win $500

Indiana is too talented and too well-coached to stay down forever. Attempting to buy low on the Hoosiers has been a fool’s errand for the last month, but go ahead and count me as a fool, because I think Archie Miller’s team is catching too many points tonight in Minneapolis.

Indiana’s slide has as much to do with its strength of schedule as anything else. Indiana is only 1-5 straight-up in its last six games, but all six of those opponents are rated higher than Minnesota by kenpom.com.

The Gophers probably win this game — the Hoosiers don’t have much of an answer for Daniel Oturu — but they shouldn’t win as comfortably as this spread implies. A few weeks ago, they would have only been laying 3 or 3.5 points in this spot.

I still think that would be a more accurate number.

Current Standings: Keefer (26-22-2, $9,135), Grimala (14-5, $8,865), Brewer (14-11, $8,195), Emerson (13-16, $5,950)
