Man critically injured in fire blamed on smoking

A fire sparked by smoking materials and fueled by medical oxygen left an elderly man in critical condition this morning , according to Las Vegas Fire & Rescue officials.

The fire was reported about 7:20 a.m. at an apartment in the 2300 block of Olive Street, near Fremont Street and Eastern Ave., officials said. The fire was confined to a bedroom.

Crews found the man, who was struggling to breathe, covered in soot, officials said. He suffered second-degree burns to his face and feet, officials said.

A preliminary investigation determined his clothing caught fire, officials said.

He was taken to University Medical Center with life-threatening injuries, officials said.
