Two people injured in overnight apartment fire

A woman was overcome by smoke during a fire late Tuesday after she went back into her apartment to find a dog, according to Las Vegas Fire & Rescue officials.

Las Vegas and North Las Vegas firefighters responded about 11:55 p.m. to the blaze at a two-story building in the 1900 block of Simmons Street, officials said. Heavy flames were coming from a window in a second-story unit, officials said.

Two adults and a baby escaped the unit where the fire started, official said. One of the adults was taken to a hospital with a serious cut on their foot, officials said.

A woman in an adjacent apartment also escaped but returned to find a pet dog, officials said. She was overcome with smoke and was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control in less than 10 minutes. The cause of the fire is under investigation, officials said.

One unit sustained fire and smoke damage and another heavy smoke damage, officials said. A damage estimate was not immediately available.
