The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory today for the Las Vegas area, with sustained winds of 20 to 30 mph and gusts up to 60 mph.

The advisory, issued for 7 a.m. today, will remain in effect until 7 p.m.

Rain was falling across the valley this afternoon and was expected to continue through about 8 p.m., according to the weather service.

Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects, and downed tree limbs could cause power outages, the weather service warned. Officials advised securing outdoor objects.

Also, strong winds over open water will make lake water rough and hazardous and could cause waves that could swamp or capsize smaller boats, officials said.

People should use extra caution when driving, especially if operating a high-profile vehicle, officials said.
