Las Vegas Raiders guard Denzelle Good has retired from football less than a week after the start of training camp, the team announced Monday afternoon.
The 31-year-old out of Division II school Mars Hill spent seven seasons in the NFL split between the Raiders and Indianapolis Colts. He tore his ACL in last season’s opener against the Baltimore Ravens and had intended to return this season but may have suffered another setback early in training camp.
Good participated in each of the first three practices last week at the Raiders’ Henderson headquarters but was not on the field for a session Sunday morning. Las Vegas resigned Jordan Meredith, an undrafted rookie free agent out of Vanderbilt, in a corresponding move on Monday to take Good’s spot on the roster.
The Raiders initially acquired Good when they claimed him off waivers following a release by the Colts at the end of the 2018 season. He played well in limited time with the Raiders in 2018 and 2019 when he was pressed into action because of injuries.
Then in 2020, with the Raiders’ offensive line ravaged by injuries, Good proved the ultimate utility man and moved around to different spots on the line to start 14 games. He played well and earned a 2-year, $8.4 million contract with the expectation that he would be a starter for the next two seasons.
The knee injury prevented that from happening. Good had been splitting time with 26-year-old Lester Cotton at training camp but the former undrafted rookie free agent out of Alabama would now seem to be the team’s most likely starting right guard.
Veteran Jermaine Eluemunor, rookie Dylan Parham and now Meredith could also push Cotton for playing time.
