A fight involving about 20 inmates broke out at High Desert State prison on Sunday, but nobody was seriously injured, according to the Nevada Department of Corrections.
The incident, which officials described as an “altercation,” happened about 6:15 p.m. at the prison near Indian Springs, about 45 miles northwest of Las Vegas.
The inmates involved were evaluated, treated and secured in their cells by about 7:30 p.m., official said. No substantial injuries were reported, and no “serious weapons” were used in the fight, officials said.
No staff members were hurt, officials said.
The Department of Corrections did not indicate what instigated the fight.
As a precaution, some indoor and outdoor recreational periods have been suspended at prisons across the state while High Desert investigators and the Inspector General's Office look into the incident, officials said.
Visitation will not be interrupted, except at High Desert, during the investigation, officials said.
Families of inmates involved in the incident should expect delays in communications, officials said.
