UNLV to be well represented in Olympics

Two current UNLV swimmers and one former Rebel have qualified for the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, China.

UNLV senior Richard Hortness won the 50-meter free at the Canadian Olympic Trials in Montreal on Sunday in a time of 22.48. Due to his finish, he will also be on the 200-meter free relay team. Earlier in the trials, Hortness earned a spot on the 400-meter free relay squad with a fifth-place finish in the 100-free in 49.42.

On Saturday night, former Rebel Joe Bartoch (2003-06) broke a six-year-old Canadian record in the 100-meter fly with a time of 52.28. That broke the previous record that was held by Mike Mintenko, also a former UNLV swimmer, who competed in the 2000 Olympics in Sydney.

At the end of last week, UNLV learned that senior Jonas Andersson had been added to the Sweden Olympic Team and will swim both the 100 breast and the breast leg on the 400-meter medley relay for the Swedish team. Andersson competed at the European Championships in the middle of March in Eindhoven, Netherlands, where his time of 1:01.60 in the 100 meter breast set a new Sweden record.
