New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi watches batting practice before Game 5 of baseball’s American League Championship Series against the Houston Astros Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2017, in New York.

The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun’s sports staff is now underway, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

New York Yankees minus-195 at Chicago White Sox: $585 to win $300

New York did not look good over the weekend, losing four straight in a sweep at the hands of the Boston Red Sox to fall 9.5 games back in the AL East. And playing in another city just 24 hours after an energy-sapping series against their arch-rivals could raise some travel-related issues for the Yanks.

But despite all that, Chicago starter Dylan Covey should be perfect fodder to get the Yankees' offense back on track. After looking lifeless in the sweep at Boston, the NYY bats will explode against Covey (4-7, 5.57 ERA, 1.57 WHIP), who has allowed at least four earned runs in seven of his last eight starts.

New York will score early and often and get back on track with a win at Chicago.

Current Standings: Keefer (5-2, $10,908), Granger (3-0, $10,455), Grimala (3-2, $9,900), Brewer (2-4, $8,240)
