American League’s Mike Trout, of the Los Angeles Angels, holds the MVP trophy after the MLB All-Star baseball game, Tuesday, July 14, 2015, in Cincinnati. The American League won 6-3.

The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun’s sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

Los Angeles Angels minus-115 at San Diego Padres: $460 to win $400

Mike Trout's trip to the disabled list will certainly impact the Angels' offensive output, and the injury that has shortstop Andrelton Simmons' status up in the air is not ideal, but LAA should have no issues scoring runs against San Diego starter Clayton Richard.

Richard has allowed 20 earned runs in his last 18 innings, and his ERA for the season is now above 5.00. Even without Trout, an Angels lineup led by Justin Upton should be able to hang a few crooked numbers on the scoreboard.

Current Standings: Keefer (6-2, $11,208), Granger (4-0, $10,855), Grimala (5-2, $10,600), Brewer (2-4, $8,040)
