Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry shoots around Los Angeles Lakers center JaVale McGee during the second half of an NBA preseason basketball game Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2018, in Las Vegas.

The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun's sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

Phoenix Suns plus-10.5 vs. Golden State Warriors: $770 to win $700

The Warriors may be two-time defending NBA champs, but they haven't quite hit their stride this season (despite a first-place record of 24-13). Blowout wins have been harder to come by, and the team just doesn't seem to have a sense of urgency during the regular season.

That leaves Golden State susceptible to trap games like Monday's outing in Phoenix. The Suns are a terrible team (9-28, 5-13 at home), but they've shown an ability to trip up better squads, as evidenced by unexplainable wins over Milwaukee, San Antonio and Boston. And since opening the season 2-13, the Suns are actually 5-4 in their last nine games.

Look for rookie big man Deandre Ayton to have a huge game, as Golden State does not put much emphasis on defending the paint. It might not be enough to get Phoenix the win, but the Suns will cover the double-digit spread.

Current Standings: Brewer (14-12-1, $10,260), Keefer (21-19-2, $10,096), Emerson (1-3, $7,062), Grimala (12-12-1, $4,845)
