Vegas Play of the Day: Pittsburgh at Virginia

The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun's sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

Pittsburgh plus-7 at Virginia: $440 to win $400

If you’ve followed Talking Points college football column throughout the year, you know we’ve ridden Virginia to success pretty consistently. But part of being a shrewd handicapper is knowing when to sell on a team.

Now is the time to sell on Virginia. The Cavaliers’ point spreads have gotten too high, as it would have been a pipe dream to see them as more than a touchdown favorite against the Panthers just a few weeks ago.

And it’s not like Pittsburgh has gotten worse since then. On the contrary, Pittsburgh is jelling with three straight covers and playing exceptionally well on offense.

Virginia hasn’t seen a rushing duo as explosive as quarterback Kenny Pickett and running back Qadree Ollison this season. Pittsburgh can score in bunches, enough that it could take Virginia out of its preferred, deliberate offensive attack.

Virginia is still the better team and should win this game at home, but it will be tight and likely come down to the end. This is too many points for the Panthers.

Current Standings: Keefer (12-12-2, $7,431), Grimala (10-9, $6,965), Brewer (5-11-1, $5,100)
