The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun's sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.
Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.
Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.
Ole Miss plus-13 vs. Mississippi State: $440 to win $400
How about following gorging too much food with feasting on too many points? This point spread is well past the point of excess.
It’s not often a team with the home team in a rivalry game with the significantly better offense is getting two touchdowns on the betting line. That’s the case tonight with Ole Miss.
Mississippi State has a great defense, but Mississippi has been able to score on almost everyone. The Rebels rate in the nation’s top 10 in gaining 6.9 yards per play, and will certainly be ready to maintain their production against the Bulldogs.
It’s their last chance, after all, as Ole Miss is on probation and not allowed to play in a bowl game. A similar Rebels’ team was a 14-point underdog in this spot last year — but the game was in Starkville, Miss. — and won outright 31-28.
That shouldn’t happen again, as Mississippi State is clearly the better team. But the Bulldogs are limited offensively, and the Rebels are not.
That makes 13 points a Thanksgiving gift.
