The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun's sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.
Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.
Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.
Packers running back Aaron Jones under 68.5 rushing yards: $330 to win $300
I have no real feel for how tonight’s Sunday Night Football game will play out, but I’ve waited too long to place my Play of the Day wager and run out of other options. So I’ll go with the one prop that caught my eye.
I’m selling high on the Packers’ second-year running back that has broken out over the last month. This actually has less to do with Jones himself than with the defense he’s facing.
Minnesota is one of only three teams in the NFL — along with New Orleans and Chicago — allowing 3.6 yards per rushing attempt or less. Jones has beaten this total in three of the last four weeks, but all of those games were against teams with average-to-poor rush defenses.
The Vikings may not have quite lived up to expectations overall this year, but they’ve stayed strong against the run. Jones will need a huge night to beat this total, and that seems unlikely.
