Vegas Play of the Day: Red Sox at Yankees

The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun’s sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

Boston Red Sox plus-114 at New York Yankees, $500 to win $570: After winning Game 3 by a score of 17-1, it seems reasonable to expect the Red Sox bats to come back to earth in Game 4, but I like their matchup against Yankees starter CC Sabathia. It probably won't be another double-digit scoring game, but now that Mookie Betts, Andrew Benintendi, J.D. Martinez and the rest of the Boston lineup is clicking, they should be able to get to Sabathia for four or five runs today.

The Boston bullpen does concern me, but if the Sox have a lead in the middle innings, expect manager Alex Cora to throw all hands on deck to wrap up the series in four. I like the Red Sox as the underdog.

Current Standings: Keefer (11-10-1, $10,281), Grimala (7-5, $8,750), Brewer (5-9-1, $6,050)
