The last time two Los Angeles-based NFL franchises faced off against each other was in week 11 of the 1994 season.
Jeff Hostetler threw for 218 yards and two touchdowns that day to lead the Raiders to a 20-17 victory over the Rams in a game between two teams that ultimately missed the playoffs.
This afternoon’s showdown between the two teams currently stationed in Los Angeles could prove more meaningful. The Rams are a 7-point favorite over the Chargers, their future stadium-mate when Los Angeles Stadium at Hollywood Park opens in 2020, in the Sun’s handicapping contest’s game of the week.
Each competing sports writer must pick six bets to place on the NFL, including one on the game of the week.
The Chargers represent the toughest test yet for the Rams, which have become the Super Bowl favorite at 9-to-2 at the Westgate Las Vegas Superbook after starting the year at 2-0 straight-up and against the spread. Like the Rams, the Chargers were favored to win their division and make the playoffs coming into the season.
That changed after their week 1 loss to the rival Kansas City Chiefs, though the Chargers are still a 9-to-4 second choice to win the AFC West. The Rams are already a massive minus-3000 (risking $30 to win $1) favorite to win the NFC West.
Like today’s Chargers vs. Rams game, the Raiders vs. Rams matchup in 1994 was also held at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The Raiders were a 3-point favorite with an over/under of 37.5 points, meaning the side pushed while the total went under by a half-point.
The over/under on today’s game sits at 48 points.
