Vegas Play of the Day: Cubs vs. Pirates

Contreras

Chicago Cubs catcher Willson Contreras (40) celebrates this third inning solo home run during the Major League Baseball All-star Game, Tuesday, July 17, 2018 in Washington.

The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun's sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

Pittsburgh Pirates plus-165 at Chicago Cubs: $500 to win $825

Chicago is stumbling toward the finish line, and after dropping the first two games of this series to Pittsburgh, the Cubs' lead in the NL Central is down to 0.5 games.

I don't think Chicago starter Jose Quintana is the guy to stop the slide. Meanwhile, Pittsburgh right-hander Ivan Nova has been dominant in three September starts (2-1, 1.10 ERA), and Cubs' slugger Kris Bryant was knocked out of Tuesday's game with a bruised wrist after being hit by a pitch.

Things just seem to be going wrong for the Cubs at the moment, and as the pressure continues to rise, breaking out of that skid will get harder and harder. Ride that pennant-race momentum and bet on Pittsburgh.

Current Standings: Current Standings: Keefer (11-8, $10,911), Grimala (7-3, $9,950), Granger (4-3, $8,825), Brewer (4-8, $6,540)
