Georgia quarterback Jake Fromm passes against Appalachian State during an NCAA college football game, Saturday, Sept. 2, 2017, in Athens, Ga. Georgia won 31-10.

The sixth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun's sports staff is now underway, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2018-19 and 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

Georgia plus-7 vs. LSU: $990 to win $900

Georgia is beating LSU. OK, that might be a bit strong. I can't be that bold when I'm not going money line.

But if there's going to be an upset in one of today's major-conference championship games, I think it comes in Atlanta. I don't even think it would be that big of an upset, though.

Georgia is great, a lot better than its currently getting credit for being.

The Bulldogs' only loss, 20-17 to South Carolina in overtime, was a complete fluke. Their postgame win probability was more than 90 percent, according to the SP+ ratings.

Georgia has an all-time defense, one that ranks up with some of Alabama's great units from earlier in the decade, that will provide LSU a new challenge. The Bulldogs' offense is more limited, but still highly effective.

In other words, they're a reverse of LSU, which has a transcendent offense to a merely above-average defense.

So maybe I won't fully commit to the Georgia outright victory, but I think a field goal decides this game either way.

Current Standings: Grimala (10-4, $9,905), Keefer (19-16-2, $8,905), Emerson (11-14, $8,390), Brewer (8-9, $6,485)
